Demo and the Hidden Secrets of the Flip House

Demolition

Where to Begin???

Okay I have to admit I was super excited about tearing up everything in this house.  I think that is the really fun part but can also be a little scary.  You never know what you are going to uncover in an old house.   We knew to expect the unexpected and we were not disappointed.  We uncovered some real jewels but nothing too major so far in the process.

So where would you start if you were renovating this house?

The first thing that stuck out to me was the wood paneling.  Be gone wood paneling be gone!!!  Next up the yucky carpet in the family room had to be taken up immediately!  The kitchen was not far down on my list followed by…..wait for it wait for it….. the wall in between the family and living rooms. Woohoo!  We are going to have an open concept.  Yes we are getting rid of that wall and opening this baby up!  I feel like the house is breathing now!!!  And the tune playing in my head is “And the walls came tumbling down.”  I was so giddy when demo started  I could hardly stand it.  The guys doing the demo thought I was a little strange standing there watching them but who cares it was exciting to me!  I should have pulled up a chair!

I know you all want to know all the plans for this house but I will reveal bits and pieces as we go along so I won’t overwhelm you.   This is a massive undertaking and takes a little guts and a little crazy.  Just think new EVERYTHING and I mean everything.  We want to do this house right and fix all the things that need fixing.  Whoever buys the flip should have confidence that they are getting a quality house!

Here are the pics of the start of the demo….

Paneling is down, carpet is gone and the wall is starting to come down.  Exciting stuff here!

Everything is out and you can really get a great look at the brick linoleum!  Should I keep it?

One more view of the kitchen demo.  What a difference!!

Family to Living demo flip

Looking all the way through to the front from the back door.  Now you can see the light coming inand the floor plan is opening up!

Family demo view to front door flip

Since this is a load bearing wall between the 2 rooms, we will be adding support in the attic to carry the load.  Yes it can be done and we are doing it!

Family demo asbestos tile flip

And last but not least look what we found under the carpet pad.  Do you know what this is?  Yep, it is asbestos tile.  Asbestos tile is usually 9 x 9 so it you see 9 x 9 tile, you need to have it checked before removing it.  It takes special care to remove it and you need to call a professional.  We called in the experts and had it abated.  No more asbestos in this house.  Everything is now safe and sound.  You just never know what you will find when you start digging into an old home.

So we are off to the races.  More demolition photos soon and more plans revealed!  Stay tuned!
